Sober Performance Coaching for High Achievers
You quit drinking, or you’re thinking about it. Now you want your career, your energy and your life to match. I’m Phillip Barbb, a sober executive and performance coach, sober since 2008, and I help driven people perform at the top of their game without alcohol.
Not sober? Not a problem. Many of my clients drink. This is one of my specialties, not a requirement. See all performance coaching options on the Coaching page.

Why I Do This Work
I’ve spent years in the entertainment industry, where the wrap party, the client dinner and the “one drink after work” are part of the job. Getting sober didn’t just change my life; it made me sharper, more reliable and more successful. I’ve earned three Emmy nominations, written a book and built a coaching practice, all sober.
But nobody hands you a playbook for being the only one not drinking at the networking event, or for what to do with all the time and energy you get back. That’s what this coaching is for.

-
Stress without self-medicating: managing pressure, emotions and the Sunday Scaries
-
Leadership and confidence: owning your story at work, and deciding who needs to know
-
Relationships and social life: building a social calendar that doesn’t revolve around a bar
Sober Coaching vs. Recovery Coaching vs. Therapy
A recovery coach or sober companion focuses on staying sober day to day, often early in recovery. A therapist treats mental health and the roots of addiction. A sober performance coach, which is what I do, works with people who have their sobriety in place (or are choosing an alcohol-free life) and want to grow their careers and performance. I don’t replace your program, sponsor or therapist. I work alongside them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be sober to work with you?
No. Many clients are sober-curious or cutting back, and many simply want performance coaching. What matters is that you want to perform at your best.
Do you work with people in AA or other programs?
Yes. Coaching complements any recovery path, including 12-step programs, SMART Recovery, therapy, or going it alone.
Is this confidential?
Completely. Many of my clients are executives and public-facing professionals.
Do you coach outside Los Angeles?
Yes. Most sessions are over Zoom and phone, so I work with clients across the U.S.
What if I’m still struggling with drinking or drug use?
Please reach out to a doctor, a treatment program, or the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357 (free, confidential, 24/7) first. Coaching works best once you have support in place.
